Biostimulants market: products in development

In addition to enhancing the plant nutrition process, biostimulants also aim to make agriculture more sustainable by reducing the use of certain inputs. Biostimulants facilitate plant development and ensure a certain quality of harvests despite climate change.

Expanding more and more globally, biostimulants offer numerous advantages to farmers who seek to achieve high-quality crops. They are increasingly used worldwide, including in Europe (notably Spain, Italy, and France), Asia, Latin America, North America, and Africa.

What are the different types of biostimulants?

Stimulating plant growth and improving crop yields, biostimulants are now noted for revolutionizing agriculture. Indeed, biostimulants boost farmers’ production and offer sustainable alternatives to traditional products, while being more eco-friendly. In recent years, various types of biostimulants have been developed by companies specializing in research and product development. Now available on the market, these biostimulants have been evaluated by scientific institutes which have confirmed their effectiveness.

There are many players involved in the development of the biostimulant market. However, if we focus on the main current players, we must mention Rovensa Next, Hello Nature, Agrauxine by Lesaffre, Syngenta Biologicals, UPL, Sicit, Acadian Plant Health , and Timac Agro. These companies and organizations use  different production  processes for their biostimulant products, each with a unique composition  (such as algae extracts, amino acids, humic substances, microorganisms, plant extracts).

Why use biostimulants?

Using biostimulants in agriculture activates the primary and secondary metabolism of plants, helping to improve their quality and yield. Although biostimulants cannot replace fertilizers, they can complement them to boost crop productivity.

Many farmers use biostimulants to offer optimal protection to plants against abiotic stress, helping to limit the use of fertilizers and plant protection products , thereby reducing their environmental impact.

While biostimulants offer multiple benefits, their effectiveness can be influenced by factors such as soil condition, crop type, application timing, and quantity used. However, biostimulants are globally recognized for their ability to enhance crop quality by promoting nutrient absorption.

What is the future of the biostimulants market?

Aiming to facilitate the agroecological transition, the biostimulants market has experienced impressive growth over several years. This growth particularly contributes to improving plant nutrition and soil health, resulting in better quality production and  stable yields despite climatic challenges.

With ongoing development, the biostimulants sector is promising and is seeing numerous innovations that will eventually provide consumers with healthier and more sustainable food to maintain their health. Addressing the needs of farmers and agricultural distributors who constantly seek new technologies to reduce chemical usage and achieve more sustainable farming, the biostimulants market is a truly thriving industry that brings together many players.

According to a study by World Fertilizer Magazine published in October 2022, the global biostimulants market is expected to reach 6.5 billion USD by 2028. This forecast indicates significant growth and helps to outline clear trends. Moreover, in the coming years, the biostimulants market should achieve a growth rate of up to 11% thanks to research and development of innovative products showcased at the World Biostimulants Congress.

Note that from a legal perspective,  biostimulants were classified under the family of Fertilizing materials and growing media  (MFSC) by a European regulation in 2019. This new regulation came into force in 2022, leading to an increase in the rate of application of biostimulants and the evolution of regulations  on other continents. This information once again highlights the promising potential of this complementary and alternative solution to fertilizers and pesticides.
